How to become a good presenter

If you are hoping to be a television presenter, it’s worth knowing what makes a good one. If you want to be on the screen, you need to know what producers are looking for. In my opinion, a television programme is only (1)........, and a presenter is only as good as the production put behind him/her. If a programme doesn’t go well, it is likely that your face will accompany the negative press. You’d (2) .......... look like a good one through your presenting skills! A presenter can’t think the only thing they need do is to turn up and speak the lines someone puts in front of them. They need to understand their role and the aim of the programme itself. A good presenter should be interested and involved in the subject they are presenting and they should have a good understanding of the audience – who is watching and why – because a good presenter is able to engage with the viewers. You have to be “real” on TV. Sometimes you see a presenter on TV and feel a sense of personal warmth from the presenter. That indefinable warmth (3)........ others, an ability to communicate with other people whether they are directly in front of them or miles away watching on their television screen. There are also star presenters. A real star (4)........... and immediately connects with those in it. They have that wonderful way of making you feel you are the center of their attention. They have a certain sense of presence and charisma. If they can do that without a camera, they can also probably do it on camera. These people have charm in spades. Last but not least, choose your programme with care. If you (5)........, never hesitate to question that job you’ve been offered. Remember to ask questions, voice any concerns, get fully involved, and make sure you know what the programme is aiming for and who your audience is. (Adapted from Want to Work in Television website)
