I NEED A JOB

I NEED A JOB

University life is one of the best parts of anybody’s life. But life on campus can be very expensive, so many students decide to get part-time jobs. Most jobs that students do are in the retail industry, in shops and department stores, or the hospitality industry, in cafes, and restaurants. These jobs include: shop assistant, waiter/waitress, or cinema staff. During term time, most students work part-time, but during holidays they can work full-time. Jun from Thailand works as а shop assistant in а sports shop. He says, ‘I need to work because I usually spend all my money in the first few weeks of term! I don’t want to work in а restaurant or cafe, so I am working in а sports shop on Saturdays. It is great. The people I work with are really helpful. There are other benefits too. It is really challenging, but I learn а lot. I am having а really good time and I meet lots of people every day. I even made some good friends.’

There are holiday jobs in the summer, too. Many of them are in tourism. Eva, from the UK, has а full-time job at а museum. ‘I’m studying History,’ she says, ‘and I’m really interested in the past, so I wrote to the director of the museum and she offered me а job. It is perfect! I give out information to visitors and tell them about the exhibits.’ And like Jun, Eva thinks she learns а lot about work. ‘I don’t just earn some money. I get very valuable work experience. It is really rewarding, I’m glad I do it,’ she adds.
