In Ancient Times

In ancient Rome, people didn’t throw dirty water from their bathrooms onto the streets. For the first time in history, about 2,700 years ago, they built a system underground to keep dirty water off the streets. Today we call this system the drainage system.

The Silk Road was paths on land and in the sea for people to take things to other places to sell. In the past, there weren’t any cars or planes, so people travelled on fixed paths because they were safer. The Silk Road started in China about 2,000 years ago and continued to Europe.

The first voting system was in ancient Greece. When there was something important for people to decide on, people voted. Democracy was born at that time, about 2,400 years ago. The word ‘democracy’ comes from two Greek words: demos (people) and kratos (power).
