Is America Becoming the Phone Death Nation?

It’s clear that no one likes to be behind or around a distracted driver. However, a recent study has revealed that more than 90% of Americans drive while being distracted. It is even funnier that the same drivers, if asked, would say that there should be laws against driving while distracted. Well, there are!

In the United States, 25% of car accidents are caused by mobile phones. Nearly 88% of distracted drivers use their phones to talk while driving. Around 70% text while driving, and about 22% take selfies or go live on Instagram or other social media apps. To an average citizen, these numbers are terrifying. Crossing the road or walking near distracted drivers is potential suicide. However, it seems that most of us use our phones while driving without knowing how easy it is to cause an accident while looking at our phones.

Before distracted driving and mobile phones become one of the top ten causes of death in America, taking action is necessary, and it starts with teens. Unfortunately, more than 1 out of 5 fatal teen accidents is caused by distraction caused by mobile phones. It is important that parents have serious conversations with their teens regarding the dangers of distracted driving.

There are also parental-lock apps that do not allow teens to use their phones to take selfies or livestream while driving. There is also a growing movement called I Can Wait, which takes in members who promise not to use their phones while driving.
