Is Cheese Rolling an Extreme Sport?

Paragraph 1: Extreme sports are activities that involve danger and excitement. Each year they are becoming more and more popular, but why? The main reason is that people love the adrenaline rush and they want to feel strong. They want to be able to say “I’ve survived this!” Some examples of extreme sports include bungee jumping, base jumping, ice climbing, cave diving, and ... cheese rolling?!

Paragraph 2: We don’t know how it started, but Cooper’s Hill Cheese-Rolling Race has taken place annually for over 100 years. The name comes from Cooper’s Hill where it takes place, just outside the village of Brockworth, England.

Paragraph 3: They throw a wheel of cheese down the hill and a group of people chase after it, trying to be the first to catch it or reach the bottom of the hill. The cheese weighs about 3kg and speeds up as it travels down the very steep slope. The winner keeps the cheese, and those coming second or third receive £10. The event has become so popular that people come from all over the world to take part or just to witness it.

Paragraph 4: But what makes cheese rolling an extreme sport? Why has the local council tried to ban the tradition? Injuries – and lots and lots of them. The hill is so steep that it’s not actually possible to run down it. Instead, you fall, bounce and roll your way to the bottom. Ambulances arrive at the event before the race even starts. They want to be ready for people who will need a trip to the hospital.
