Jobs in the 19th Century
Some jobs now belong to the past. No one does them today because no one needs them, but they were important sometime in the past.
There were some people called ‘knocker-uppers’. They woke people up in the morning. They used sticks, stones and other things to make noise to wake people up. Knocker-uppers were useful because people wanted to get to their work on time. People needed them because there were no alarm clocks back then.
There were lots of ice cutters in the past. People needed ice to keep their food cold. At that time, there weren’t any fridges in kitchens, so people kept their food and drinks in small rooms called ‘cellars’, and they used ice to keep the cellars cool.
In the past, street lights used gas to burn, so cities needed lamplighters to light the street lights. They lit the street lights in the evening and put them out early in the morning. Today, because we have electricity and electric light bulbs, nobody works as a lamplighter.
