Jobs that no longer exist

Some jobs now belong to the past. No one does them today because no one needs them.
But sometime in the past, they were important.

There were some people called knocker-uppers who woke people up in the morning.
They used sticks, stones and other things to make noise to wake up people.
People employed knocker-uppers because they wanted to get to work on time.
People needed them because there were no alarm clocks back then.

There were lots of ice cutters in the past. Ice was necessary to keep a lot of things, like food, cold.
At that time there weren’t any modern fridges in kitchens, so people kept their food in small rooms called cellars,
and they used ice to keep them cool.

In the past, street lights used gas to burn, so there were lamplighters.
They lit the street lights in the evening and put them out early in the morning.
Today because we have electricity and electric light bulbs, nobody works as a lamplighter.
