King of Mars

King of Mars

We didn’t think our colony on Mars would have a king. When we moved to Mars 10 years ago, everyone was equal. We all had standard bedrooms. Everyone ate meals in the same cafeteria. Everyone earned the same amount of money at their jobs. We had one police officer and one friendly leader named Mayor Mike Miller. Things are very different now.
After a few months, the Oxygen Group charged us a tax for oxygen. That was shocking, but people
accepted it because the rules of the colony didn’t guarantee oxygen. We were horrified when they
took control of the water and electricity of the colony and started to charge a tax for them, too. The rules said water and electricity were free. Many people protested so the Oxygen Group turned off the oxygen for the whole colony. It was difficult to breathe for one day.
Suddenly, a man named Ronald Richman took control of the Oxygen Group and turned the oxygen back on. He was our hero. He ended the tax on water and electricity. He put the old leader of the Oxygen Group in jail because he had broken the rules. We loved Ronald Richman and gave him control of the colony. Then he started charging a food tax, a clothing tax, a bathroom tax and a
communication tax. When we moved to Mars, talking to our friends and family on Earth was free. Now it is so expensive that most people can’t do it. Ronald Richman became King Ronald. He controls our food, water, electricity and oxygen. We have to pay for everything. There is nothing we can do to stop him.
