Life in the 1950s
Hi. I’m Tommy. Yesterday, I found my grandfather’s photo album. I looked at the photos with him, asked him some questions and he told me how life was in the 1950s. There was a black and white TV set in his house because color TVs were new and very expensive. Everyone watched the same channel, because there was only one TV at home. He listened to the radio with his parents in the evenings. He was happy when he heard his favourite songs on the radio. People used coal to heat their houses. Everyone sat in the same room in the evenings because the other rooms were cold, so my grandfather used his room just to sleep. Was it possible to go to his room and talk to his friends on the phone? No, it wasn’t. There was just one phone, and his parents used it when they needed. He made his toys because they were very expensive to buy, and there wasn’t a toy shop in his town. He didn’t have lots of toys. When the weather was bad, he played with his toys at home or helped his mother. When it was warm, he played with his friends outside. His life wasn’t the same as our lives, but he was a happy kid.
