LIFE ON A HOUSEBOAT

LIFE ON A HOUSEBOAT

Amsterdam is a lovely city with its old buildings, canals and houseboats. There are 2,500 houseboats in the city and they aren't cheaper than apartments anymore. Houseboats in expensive neighbourhoods are prestigious nowadays and cost a lot of money. Nadia, from Italy, lives in a houseboat with her husband. She describes her life on the houseboat:

“After our first visit to Amsterdam, we decided to rent a houseboat and move to this amazing city. Luckily, we

found one on the internet and it was available for rent. The houseboat was in the middle of the city. The landlady

showed us all the furniture - shelves and chairs, a desk and side tables for the bed. All these were made by hand.

“There must be water rats!” said my husband. Our landlady laughed and said “No way! You can see mice and rats

in those old buildings, but not on this boat!” We've lived in our lovely houseboat since 2011.

I love this place even more than I did when we first moved in. Coming home after work is magical. You feel like

you're on holiday! In summer it is nice and cool, and in the winter it is cosy. The sound of the rain on the roof,

makes you sleep like a baby! I can play the violin whenever I want. Neighbours never complain. Well... There are

some disadvantages of course. There is not enough space so it gets very messy quickly. Unfortunately, there's not

enough room for guests either.”

From simple to luxurious, rustic to modern, Amsterdam has a houseboat for every taste. You can find the right
