Lives of Extraordinary Women

Lives of Extraordinary Women

The two writers Elena Favilli and Francesca Cavallo present readers of all ages a great collection of female role models in their newest work. Their recent book entitled “Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls” has collected the life stories of 100 women. The woman who have been given a place in their book are not ordinary women. From Margaret Thatcher to Coco Chanel, and from scientists to astronauts and artists, the book includes short biographies of women who have influenced the world with their successful and extraordinary lives.

The book will be a great inspiration for young girls. It shows an image of women away from the stereotype of someone who cooks, and takes care of the house and the kids. The stories in the book encourage young girls to think bigger and dream bigger. The essential message that Favilli and Cavallo aim to spread with their book is that gender, color or age differences should not become obstacles or limit people’s capabilities.

One of the most striking biographies in the book is the life of Mae C. Jemison who was both an astronaut and a doctor. She grew up as a very indecisive girl who wanted to become a fashion designer, an engineer, a dancer, a doctor and an astronaut. She studied chemical engineering and learned to speak Russian, Swahili – an African language - and Japanese. There was no limit to the things she could do. Finally, she applied to NASA to become an astronaut. She was sent to space after a year of training. When she was in space, she conducted tests on the members of the space crew. As she was also a doctor, she conducted experiments on things like weightlessness and motion sickness. When she came back to Earth, she realized that her true passion was to improve health care in Africa. So, she quit NASA and founded a company to follow her passion.

There are 99 more stories like Mae Jemison’s in the book, all of which give enthusiasm, confidence and hope to people no matter what their gender, color and age are.
