LIVING PLACES AROUND THE WORLD
People have always built shelters according to the places they live. So, the concept of “home” changes according not only to the available tools and materials, but also to the climate. Here are three uncommon types of houses around the world.
CAVE HOUSES
Built in a central area, cave homes in Matmata, Tunisia are connected to each other with passageways. People in the region have been designing cave houses for many centuries using sandstone as material in order to protect themselves from the North African sun and desert winds.
STILT HOUSES
Due to the heavy rains in Southeast Asia, people prefer stilt houses. These houses are raised up on long, broad and thick pieces of timber in order to be protected from flooding. These high homes also keep people safe from snakes and insects. They can also found in Western countries where hurricanes are a danger.
UNDERGROUND HOUSES
People living in Coober Pedy, which is a South Australian town, have built their houses beneath the Earth’s surface. Half of the population in the town prefer living in underground houses in order to protect themselves from high temperature and dust storms.
