LIVING THE COLDEST LIFE
According to the ‘Washington Post’ news, the coldest town in the world is Oymyakon. It’s a small village with about 500 people living. The town is in Siberia, in the very north and close to the Arctic circle.
The temperature in Oymyakon drops to below zero. It gets colder in winter; it can be -58 degrees. That is 90 degrees colder than when water turns to ice. In this cold, the eyelashes freeze. Frostbite is constant danger. Fingers, toes, and noses are often in danger if you are outside in the very cold weather.
Recently, a cold snap hit Oymyakon. The town recorded the temperature at -74 degrees. The all-time low was five years ago with -98 degrees!
It’s questioned by many people about how these people live in Oymyakon for many reasons. Winter days are short in Oymyakon; the town is in darkness for 21 hours a day. It’s also hard to get to Oymyakon because it’s far from any other town and you need to take many vehicles. People eat mostly meat because they can’t grow crops.
Although life is hard in Oymyakon, the residents are proud and happy with their lives. They have heat in all the buildings and backup power generators to keep the heat on if the electricity goes out.
