Mike: Helping

Mike: Helping

Mike is a 16 year-old boy who goes to school just like all the other people in his age. He often hangs out with his friends at the weekend. His friends like listening to music, playing an instrument or doing sports, but he prefers knitting.

He started knitting when he was 7 years old with the help of his grandmother, Molly. Molly cannot knit now, because she lost her sight – she cannot see well because of old age. But, she says Mike is a very talented young man and he has a heart of gold. She says Mike likes knitting as much as he likes helping people. Now, he knits for homeless children, who have to live in the streets when it is cold outside. He knits scarves, woollen hats, blankets and even toys for them. Mike and Molly go out every Sunday to give out the things Mike knitted that week. Mike says he will keep knitting until everyone in the world has a scarf and a woollen hat to wear in winter.

He wants to enter the knitting competition organized by the community Knitting for All. It is a competition open to children, teens and adults. If he wins, he will spend the prize money to buy more yarn and needles and to help more homeless children. He says he will not be sorry if he cannot win. He thinks this competition is a good opportunity for him to tell more people about his project. He believes he can persuade a lot of people to join him.
