MY ADVENTUROUS UNCLE

MY ADVENTUROUS UNCLE

My uncle is full of surprises. He showed me some old photographs. When he was 20 years old, he was a mountain climber. He told me that mountain climbing is a sport where people climb mountains. Mountain climbers use their arms and legs to climb up mountains. Sometimes they walk many hours to climb up.
A mountain climber uses a belt, a rope and wears special shoes and safety
equipment. They also wear heavy coats, gloves and hats to protect themselves from the cold. Uncle Tom said climbing a mountain can be very dangerous. It’s usually very windy and cold in the mountains. Every year, people get hurt from falling or getting too cold. My uncle had a terrible accident when he was young.
He was climbing up a mountain all by himself. It was March, and it was snowy. It was
so cold that he couldn’t feel his hands he said. He climbed up 800 metres and it started to snow a lot. He couldn’t see anything. He waited for a while but it snowed and snowed. He decided to walk. There was ice under the snow. Then he stepped on some slippery rocks and fell down. He felt a strong pain in his arm and shoulder. He tried to hold the rope and pull himself but it hurt so much, he couldn’t do it. He walked a little to find his way but the wind started and everywhere was just white with snow.
Luckily, his telephone worked and he called
his friends at the camp. He was very scared because it was dark and cold. He used his gas heater to warm up, but soon the gas finished. He waited about two hours for them to come and save him. He was very lucky. He never went climbing alone again. He said he was very young and adventurous. He showed me that photo where he stands at the top of the mountain. I think he is very brave.
