Old Inventions

Music Cassette

Music cassettes had a magnetic ribbon inside and they were mostly used in cars up until the mid-1990s. Before cars, people used them with Walkmans and with cassette players at home in the 1980s. You could buy them with music on them, or you could record your own music from a radio onto these cassettes. Now, we use our mobile phones, CDs or MP3 players instead.

Black and White TV

The first colour TV was invented in 1954, but it was very expensive. Only rich people had colour TVs at home. Most people started to have colour TVs at home in 1970s, because they became cheaper. Now, we use LCD TVs instead. They are larger and have a clearer picture.

VHS Cassettes

VHS cassettes were similar to music cassettes, but VHS cassettes were bigger. People used them for watching films on their TV. They couldn’t watch a film only through a VHS because they needed a player to connect it to the TV. This player was called a VCR. These days we use DVDs and DVD players instead of VHS cassettes and VCRs.

Typewriter

The typewriter was invented in the 1830s. People used this machine until the 1980s. Many journalists and writers used them. Now we use computers instead. Computers are easier to use than typewriters.
