Once upon a time: An Erasmus experience of a lifetime
The Erasmus program has changed the lives of over 3 million students. All of these students shared the common experience of an academic and cultural exchange. It has enriched their lives and changed their futures. We asked Luca, Emma, Judith and Lorenzo to give us a personal insight on how being an Erasmus student feels seeing as they had already been through this life-changing experience. See what they said about their Erasmus exchange!
Luca, Spanish (studied in Finland): I am on Erasmus exchange for this entire year. The experience has been incredible so far; trips to Russia, Sweden and Estonia have been real highlights. Since arriving in Finland, I have created a network of friends from all over the world; India, China and Brazil to name a few. Learning how to manage my life is really fun. This has taught me that I’m not a child or teenager anymore, I have become an adult!
Emma, English (studied in Sweden): Many students like me have thought about studying abroad at some point even before starting to apply for university. In your first and second year, you start to research what universities you can choose because you had enough of seeing the same 4 walls every day. My journey began in February 2014. I studied for one semester, and my only regret is that I didn’t go for the whole year. It was the best experience I’ve had throughout my time at university and I would recommend it to everyone.
Judith, French (studied in Spain): Travel is a word linked to the Erasmus programme: If you have an opportunity to travel, just do it! While living in Spain for a year, I saw many Spanish towns and villages as well as some neighbouring countries. Traveling is also an important way to learn from others. Erasmus is everything: it’s traveling, partying, studying and meeting people. I have made lots of friends, learnt Spanish and fell in love with Madrid. Madrid is a city I call home now. It was a great experience which has taught me a lot about life. I’m planning to go back to Spain as often as possible to treat my ‘post-Erasmus depression’.
Lorenzo, Italian (studied in Turkey): Istanbul has always been in my imagination. I have always wanted to see the city of two continents and understand its mysticism and spirituality; so the decision to spend my Erasmus program in Istanbul for a year was an easy one. It was four years ago when I started my Erasmus adventure, and my life has never been the same since. Everyone should do it! Don't even think twice!
