Our Amazon Adventure

Our Amazon Adventure

We went hiking in the Amazon rainforest yesterday. I loved it, but it was much scarier than I expected. My dad bought a map for one dollar. The map was written in Portuguese, but my dad said only the drawings mattered on a map. My mum didn’t want to take any risks with a map we didn’t understand, but my dad didn’t listen. He started walking, so we followed him.
I saw the biggest bugs of my life there. Most people would be afraid of them, but not me. Did you know there are 30 million types of insects in the Amazon? My favourite was the bullet ant. Bullet ants are over 3 centimetres long, and when they sting you, it feels like a gunshot. Luckily, none of them bit me. Then there were fishing spiders. They are 20 centimetres wide and live next to the river. They can glide across the water and catch fish. Can you imagine seeing a spider catch a fish from the river and then eat it?
The worst part was the howler monkeys. They screamed so much, and it made us crazy. We decided to head home. That was when the problems really began. My dad couldn’t find the way out of the rainforest. He said the paths were different from the drawings on the map. It got really dark, and it started to rain. My mum was so angry at my dad. Then my brother found a poison dart frog on his shoulder. They are tiny but deadly. He screamed and then the monkeys started screaming again. Finally, two men passed by us. My dad showed them our map, but they said it was for a different part of the Amazon. They showed us the way out of the forest. My mum was overjoyed.
