PAST TECHNOLOGY
Have your grandparents ever told you that life in their time was much harder? They might not be wrong! In fact, life today is much more comfortable and easier than it was in the past for many reasons.
First, technology has made modern-day life much more comfortable than it was in the past. During our grandparents’ time, life was rough because all the work was done without any technological tools. Therefore, their work load was heavier. For example, they had to do their laundry by hand, and probably with cold water. Transportation was also a problem. Travelling from one place to another took many hours, and sometimes days. There were no fast trains, or planes. Life without technology affected communication too. People didn’t have mobile phones or social media accounts that they could use to reach their friends and family members who lived far away from them. It wasn’t easy to communicate whenever or wherever they were. The absence of advanced communication tools actually had a positive effect on relationships though. It made people value the time they spent with others more.
The differences between life today and in the past can also be seen in entertainment. In the past, the choices for entertainment were limited. People could, at best, listen to the radio or perhaps watch a black-and-white movie for pleasure. In some areas, electricity was limited, so people didn’t have lights in the evenings. Burning candles was their usual way to light their houses. In those areas, they occupied their time by reading books, or playing board games.
In addition, people in the past didn’t have as much leisure time as we have today. Today, computers or machines do most of the work. Almost everything can be created by them in factories. However, in the past, human force was necessary to get the work done. People worked in factories or on farms for many hours as there were no machines to work for them. In contrast, many people today simply work from nine to five in front of computers, and they can take many holidays.
