Prehistorical Animals
Dire wolf
The dire wolf was the largest wolf ever. It was 25% larger than today’s grey wolf — it was about 1.5 meters long and weighed nearly 79 kilograms. The dire wolf also had sharper teeth, wider jaws and a more powerful bite force than the grey wolf.
Moa
Moas were giant birds. They were even taller and heavier than today’s ostriches. Like ostriches, they couldn’t fly. Moas had strong beaks that could cut wood. They used this wood to make nests.
Haast’s eagle
The Haast’s eagle was the largest of any eagle. It was 1.4 metres long and 16 kilograms – nearly two times heavier than today’s eagles.
Woolly mammoth
Before there were elephants, there were mammoths. It was not much larger than today’s African elephant but had high shoulder humps and thick fur which made it look much bigger. It also had tusks that could grow up to 4.6 metres long.
