Reading: POLLUTION

Pollution is the process of making land, water, air or other parts of the environment dirty and unsafe or unsuitable to use. The environment has been polluted in various ways; however, three main ones are air, land and water pollution.

Air pollution occurs due to the release of chemicals and other dangerous materials such as carbon monoxide gas from exhaust pipes of motor vehicles, or sulphur oxides from the burning of coal and oil. Air pollution can lead to serious health problems like breathing problems, lung cancer and heart disease.

Land pollution results from the destruction of the earth’s land surfaces. Misuse or overuse of lands, over-mining of minerals or careless disposal of wastes may be counted as some of the major reasons of land pollution. Apart from many different health problems, land pollution may cause natural disasters such as floods and landslides.

Contamination of lakes, rivers and seas result in water pollution. Not only organisms, animals and plants but also people are affected badly. The polluted water can cause serious diseases such as cholera and typhoid fever.
