Reading: THE INTERNET

An Internet user is defined as an individual who has access to the Internet at home, via a computer or mobile device. In 1995, only 1% of the world’s population had an internet connection but now the number of Internet users is around 40%.

Asia is the region with the highest number of users and China is the country with the most users, almost 650 million. Europe takes third place after North and South America.

As the number of Internet users grows, more surveys and studies are conducted worldwide to display reasons and statistics.

A survey which was conducted in Britain reveals that youngsters spend more than 27 hours a week online. Thousands of 16 to 24 year-olds took part in this survey for the Media Use and Attitudes report. According to the report, computers are still the number one device used to access information on the Internet yet the usage of mobile phones is increasing sharply day by day.

Today, people spend their time on the internet not only to search for data but mostly to play games and watch videos. Both teenagers and adults use the Internet to check their social media accounts and for instant messaging. Young people prefer watching movies or TV series online instead of on TV.
