Red Umbrella

Red Umbrella

To put up an umbrella to keep the water off when it rains is natural. However, the umbrella was not invented for protection against rain. Its first use was as shade against the sun!

The inventor is unknown yet they are said to have been used in very ancient times. The first people to use them were probably the ancient Egyptians and Babylonians and they used them as a sunshade. Interestingly, they were a symbol of honour and authority. Only royal people were allowed to use them in the Far East. Usage of umbrellas as a sunshade was also common in ancient Greece and in China in the eleventh century. It is said that the ancient Romans were the first to use it as protection against the rain.

During the Middle Ages, the use of the umbrella vanished completely in Europe. Then it appeared again, first in Italy, then in France and later in England in the late sixteenth century. By the 18th century, the umbrella was again popular in most of Europe. Now, they are everywhere in a variety of colours and styles.

With new technology we use umbrellas for even more reasons. A new invention named “OOmbrella” syncs with an app to remind you not to forget it. It even tells you about any incoming rainstorms and informs you about the weather
