Romulus and Remus
Mars, the Roman God of war, was married to Rea, a human, and they both had twin sons called Romulus and Remus. They loved the boys dearly, but some of the other Gods were jealous of these boys and Rea decided she had to protect them. One day, she took the beautiful infant babies and with a heavy heart she placed them in a basket and floated them down the turbulent river. She hoped they would be found by a loving family, and that is just what happened. The twins were discovered, but not by a human family, amazingly, but by a female wolf. In fact, they were suckled and brought up with her own cubs. After a while, the wolf took the boys to a shepherds’ house and left them there, where a kind, childless couple happily adopted them. Both boys grew to be strong, young men and very soon they argued over who would be the leader of their kingdom . When Romulus thought that Remus might be the bravest warrior , he made a terrible plan. This was to murder his brother so his position as King would be guaranteed . After this, he became the first king of Rome and as he was the son of a God, this made Rome an enormously important city too. Indeed, it’s believed this is how Rome got its name.
