San Diego: A Green City

San Diego: A Green City

San Diego is a very green city. People care about the environment very much.
In 2015, the city decided to become as green as possible.
By 2035, San Diego wants all power to come from solar and wind sources.

The city put in 15,000 ‘smart’ streetlights.  Every week, a truck comes and picks up everyone’s recycling.
All businesses must recycle their plastics, glass and metal waste.
Many people in San Diego use cotton or canvas bags instead of plastic bags.

The city also encourages people to donate old technology.  People often donate their old computers,
cell phones, and televisions.  These are given to schools or libraries in need.

The city is next to the Pacific Ocean. Unfortunately, lots of garbage wash up onto the beaches.
There are many charities working hard to keep the beaches clean.  People volunteer and pick up rubbish.
Also, the city has protected areas in the ocean.  This means people cannot disturb marine life.
No boating or scuba diving is allowed there.  Also, chemicals and waste cannot be dumped in that area.
Hopefully, more cities follow San Diego’s example.
