SCHOOL HOLIDAYS

Many schools in the world have a very long summer holiday every year. They usually have a two-week holiday in winter and a two-month holiday in summer. Some teachers in the U.S.A don’t like this system. They say that students forget many things during summer holiday because it is very long. And when the school opens, teachers do many review lessons so that students can remember everything they have forgotten. Now many schools in the U.S.A have classes all year long. These schools are called year-round schools. Some people think these schools are better, some people are not sure.

Many schools in the U.S.A follow a traditional calendar but now there are more year-round schools. Schools on a traditional calendar take a two-month summer holiday. Year-round schools have more holidays during the year but these holidays are not long. They are only one or two weeks long.

Many people like year-round schools because students don’t take a long break from classes. Teachers don’t do review lessons so they don’t lose time. They say it is better for learning. Shannon Oelrich is a parent from Minnesota. She thinks this system is better. She says “Students get bored in long summer breaks. They have nothing to do and they miss their friends and school.”

Some other people don’t like the idea of year-round schools. They say a long summer break is important for students and their families. Families like spending time together. Students can travel to other places during long holidays. Also, high school students can work in part-time jobs during the summer.
