Seahorse

The Latin name for a seahorse is Hippocampus. It means ‘horse caterpillar.’ Seahorses are fish. They are strange animals. Let’s read about them.

The Seahorse’s Body

Its face looks like a horse’s face. Seahorses have got rings of bony plates on their body. These bony plates make their body strong. Seahorses have got long and curly tails. They use this tail to hold on to corals or seaweeds. They have got two eyes. Each eye can turn to different directions.

Food

Seahorses eat plankton, small fish and shrimps. They don’t go after their food. Instead, they hold on a coral or a seaweed and wait their food to pass by.

Habitat

They live on the sea floor. You can find seahorses everywhere in the world.

Important Fact

There are 35 different kinds of seahorses in the world. All of them know how to hide themselves because they know how to change colour. They hold onto coral or seaweed and seahorses change their colour to the same colour of the coral or seaweed. They also swim very slowly.
