Shopping: A Hobby or Not a Hobby?

Shopping: A Hobby or Not a Hobby?

OK, we all love shopping from time to time, but is shopping something that can be considered a hobby? Let us know your opinion.

ANNA: Sure, I do some other things, like going to the movies, taking walks, working out, and reading. But none of those pastimes occupies as much of my time as shopping. If I have some extra time, I shop. If I don’t want to do anything, I shop. The list goes on and on!

PAUL: I read in the paper that a girl considered her favourite hobby to be shopping. Is it right to call shopping a hobby? Yes, you do it in your spare time, but in that case, you can call watching TV or taking a nap a hobby.

JULIA: Shopping is my biggest pastime. I have other hobbies, of course, but I love clothes and beauty and skincare. Going to the mall is a favourite part of my routine even if I don’t buy something new every day. It’s not that I can’t control myself; it’s just that it’s something I love to do!

EDDIE: You do hobbies in your spare time for entertainment or relaxation. Thus, I suppose that you could call shopping a hobby if you were so inclined. It would certainly be an expensive hobby, but a hobby nevertheless.

TIM: In my opinion, it is not a hobby at all! Can you write shopping as a hobby on your CV? That’s ridiculous!

RITA: We can agree on this: Shopping costs money and is not a hobby. Why don’t you try some “real” hobbies such as reading or knitting? They also have lower costs.

MEGGIE: How empty must your life be if your only hobby is shopping? You should take up a more meaningful activity as your hobby. You really shouldn’t spend all your time hanging out at malls. It is much better to travel to new locations and explore the great wide world. You could go on an adventurous holiday with friends or just spend time doing anything which puts a smile on your face. I have no doubt that you will get much more happiness from your adventures than you will from just spending all your time shopping.
