Social Networks

With developing technology, communication has become easier. People can find their long-lost friends via social media. Communication has become easier and cheaper than before. A lot of applications, which enable people to communicate through the internet, have been introduced and are being widely used. Long distance isn’t a big deal anymore. The world is at the fingertips of people. We can share information, pictures and track down what our friends are doing. At first these websites were considered a form of entertainment but now they’re part of our lives. We should keep in mind that they have negative sides as well as positive ones.

We cannot deny the fact that social networking plays an important role in the life of most teenagers. Statistics show that teenagers spend hours using social media sites and 1 out of 7 minutes is spent on Facebook. You may wonder how spending time on these websites may have a positive effect. Well, social networks enable people to open and manage accounts. These accounts help them and their friends, relatives, colleagues to find each other. People who have the same interests can form groups and share ideas and information. In this way they strengthen their relationship and always stay in touch.

As for the negative effects; it definitely creates a kind of isolation. Because of spending too many hours on the Internet, teenagers hardly ever have face-to-face interaction. As a result of being isolated, they may have emotional, psychological, mental and even physical problems which include anxiety, depression etc.

Another negative effect is on their writing. While texting teenagers don’t care about spelling mistakes and punctuation, they don’t even write complete words; instead they use abbreviations. As time goes by they forget the rules of writing. It’s obvious that social media has both positive and negative aspects. Taking advantage of it or being affected negatively by it is the decision of the user.
