Stephen King is a best-selling writer. He became famous for his books in the horror and fantasy genres. “Carrie”, “The Shining” and “IT” are some examples of his globally well-known books. There are TV adaptations of his books as well.
He was born on September 21, 1947 in Portland. His parents were Donald and Nellie Ruth Pillsbury King. They had a divorce when Stephen was a young kid. He went to Lisbon Falls High School and graduated from the University of Maine. He started writing for the school newspaper and was in student government. He published his first short story when he was a student at the university. After graduating from the school with a degree, he worked as a teacher. He continued writing stories in his free time.
He got married in 1971. He released his first novel, “Carrie” in 1973. It tells the story of an abused teen. The book was a huge success and he stopped teaching to write more. King published some of his books under the name of Richard Bachman because he thought that people wouldn’t accept more than one book from the same writer.
King wrote one book each year in the 80s and 90s. Movie directors adapted his stories into big screen. One of them is Misery in 1990. Actress Katy Bates and actor James Caan starred in the movie. It was a commercial success and even brought the actress an Oscar for her performance.
