Summer Solstice

Summer Solstice

Also known as the summer solstice, Midsummer represents the middle of summer and the longest day of the year. Midsummer is traditionally celebrated in England on June 24th with Midsummer Night celebrated on June 23th. Midsummer Night is a time for celebration and ritual surrounding the power of the sun, fairies, and spirits.

Ancient people believed that Midsummer Night was a time when spiritual forces could pass through the door between this world and the next. In ancient times, people lit fires both to ward off evil spirits and to provide light for those celebrating. They leapt through fires for good luck and the streets were lit by lanterns.

Other Midsummer Night customs included decorating houses with plants and flowers.
