Layne Beachley was born on 24th May 1972. Layne started surfing when she was just four years old and was often the only girl surfer. Layne entered her first surfing contest at 14 years of age, usually competing against men. At age 16, Layne appeared for the first time on the Association of Surfing Professionals world tour. By the time she was 20, she was ranked number 6 in the world. In 1998, Layne won the first of 6 consecutive world titles. She is the only surfer to win six world titles in a row. She then won a seventh world title in 2006. Layne won a lot of awards for her surfing skills and is a member of the Australian and US surfing halls of fame. Layne retired in 2008, but still loves surfing. Layne created a women’s surfing event that she hosted for seven years. She was a director of the Association of Surfing Professionals for 15 years. She is the chairperson of Surfing Australia, the national organisation for surfing in Australia. She also works with a lot of charities and created a foundation to help young women in Australia achieve their goals.
