THANKSGIVING AND SHOPPING
Thanksgiving is one of the most important national holidays in the USA. It takes place on the fourth Thursday of every November. Many family members will travel across the country to get together and share in a very special time with one another. To celebrate, they spend hours preparing and cooking favourite family meals.
In recent years, the day after Thanksgiving has also become an important day for many Americans. The fourth Friday of every November is called ‘Black Friday’ and it’s the biggest shopping day of the year. This is because many people don’t go back to work after Thanksgiving. Instead, they spend Friday and the weekend shopping. It is also traditionally the beginning of the Christmas season and people start their Christmas shopping on this day. Shops are known for putting on massive sales by greatly lowering their prices.
Some people, however, celebrate ‘Black Friday’ in a very different way. They call this day ‘Buy Nothing Day.’ Specifically on this day, they try to avoid buying unnecessary stuff. They believe that buying things does not bring happiness.
