According to a recent research made by “The American Heart Association,” the fitness levels of today’s children are lower than 30 years ago. In this research, researchers looked at information about children in 28 different countries. There were around 25 million children in this study. Of course these children were from the past 46 years. The researchers found out that children today are not as fast as their parents because these kids run a kilometre a minute slower than their parents did when they were kids. The distance a child can run is slowing down nearly five per cent every ten years. One of the biggest reasons for this decrease in children’s running ability is obesity. Unhealthy eating habits like fast food, having a less energetic life and spending more time with computers can cause obesity. Kids are overweight because they eat too much and do not exercise enough. Because kids are not fit and healthy enough, their ability to run is decreasing.
Researchers are worried because children are fatter and less fit, which means they will be unhealthier in the future. The researcher Dr. Tomkinson says, “These kids are under risk of heart disease problems in their future lives because they do not live healthily enough. Parents need to help their children so that they can develop fitness habits that will keep them healthy now and in the future. They can try many different physical activities to see if they like them.” He also says, “These kids need to move but every person has their own ways to keep fit. For example some kids like cycling and some like kick boxing or playing tennis.” Therefore, parents should observe what their kids like and then they should encourage their kids to keep fit in that way.
