The Eiffel Tower

The Eiffel Tower

The Eiffel Tower, located on the Champ de Mars Paris, France was built in 1889. The French name for the Eiffel Tower is La Tour Eiffel. It also has the nickname La Dame de Fer which means the Iron Lady. The tower, which is one of the most well-known structures in the world, is named after Gustave Eiffel, the engineer who designed and built it.

The tower was initially designed as a special attraction for the entrance to the 1889 World’s Fair. At first, French people disliked and even criticized the designer. They didn’t approve of the idea of using iron as the main material as they thought it would look like a giant skeleton. Although most people changed their minds after seeing it finished, there are still some artists and intellectuals who criticize its bold design.

The Eiffel Tower is made of iron and weighs around 10,000 tons. It is 320 meters (1050 feet) in height and was the tallest man made structure in the world for 41 years before being surpassed by the Chrysler Building in New York. There is an elevator and also there are steps people can use to climb to the top. From the tower, they can get a marvellous view of the city and the River Seine which runs through it. Millions of people climb the Eiffel Tower every year and it has had over 250 million visitors since its opening.
