THE FAMILY FARM
I lived on a farm when I was a boy. It was such a beautiful place to grow up. It was my great-grandfather’s farm, and then it was my grandfather’s farm. My father tried to be a farmer, but no one wanted to buy vegetables from him. A big supermarket opened in our town, and their vegetables were much cheaper than my dad’s vegetables. It was more convenient for them too, because they could buy their vegetables and everything else they needed at the same supermarket. My dad tried to explain to the people in the town that it’s important to buy local vegetables, but they didn’t listen. They liked the supermarket. Then a corporate farm bought most of the fields in our town. My dad didn’t want to sell our fields because it was his family’s farm. He sold his vegetables at a farmer’s market for a few years, but we just didn’t have enough money to live. My dad gave up being a farmer and he sold our fields to the enemy: the corporate farm. Actually, this was good because they paid two million dollars for our farm! Then my dad bought a chain of grocery stores called “Petey’s Groceries.” It’s a very successful chain and they sell the vegetables from our old farm!
