The Future is Now !
In 1989, director Robert Zemeckis created a film about the future he imagined. The film, called ‘Back to the Future: Part II’, was the second in the trilogy. It tells the story of Marty McFly and his companion, Doc Brown, as they travelled through time. The future they encountered was that of 21st October 2015.
Set in 1985, the movie begins with Marty in front of his home. All of a sudden, Doc Brown appears and warns Marty that something has gone wrong and they urgently need to travel to the future to fix it. They jump into a trash-powered car/time machine that Doc Brown invented, called ‘The DeLorean’, and blast off. When they arrive in 2015, they find themselves in a futuristic town with hover boards, 3D movie posters, palm computers, and people wearing strange clothing with self-lacing shoes. On 21st October 2015, people across America celebrated ‘Back to the Future Day’. In New York City, a special type of ‘DeLorean’ gave taxi rides. A technology company called Arx Pax released a new hover board, a technology made famous by the film.
While the future that Zemeckis imagined isn’t quite like the world we have today, the ambitious director didn’t get it completely wrong. Technology such as drones, video-phones, and hands-free video games were all shown in the film. Despite all of the excitement surrounding Back to the Future Day, there is one thing we can say for sure we won’t see in the future—another Back to the Future film. According to Zemeckis, it won’t happen. Or will it?
