The Great Train Robbery

The Great Train Robbery

In the year of 1963, one day, people read about one of the biggest robberies of Britain on the newspapers. A gang of 15 men stopped the Royal Mail train which was travelling to London from Scotland at 3 am. They were very smart, because they stopped the train by changing the signal from green to red. They stole 2.6 million pounds which is the equivalent of 46 million pounds today

After the robbery, they went to a farmhouse to share the money that they stole. At that time, a neighbour realized some strangers in the farmhouse and called the police. When the police officers came there, they found post office bags and fingerprints. They arrested 11 of the robbers and they were sent to prison.

One of the robbers was very famous. He was called, Ronnie Biggs. In 1965, he was sent to prison for 30 years, but of course, he had a plan. After staying in the prison for 15 months, he escaped from there by getting into a furniture van that went to Brazil. He lived there until 2001 and then he wanted to go back to Britain. This time, he was not that lucky. He was arrested again in Britain. When he went on a trial, the judge asked him this question: “Why do you rob?”. His answer was surprising for everyone. He said “Working and earning money is not my life style. Stupid people work and gain and smart people take or rob their money”. This answer was so insulting for the judge, so he was sent to prison for 30 more years
