When Amazon.com opened for business on July 16, 1995, it was nothing more than a few people packing and shipping boxes of books from a two - car a) ..................... . in Bellevue, Wash. Jeff Bezos quit his job as vice - president and drove cross country from New York to relocate in Seattle, Washington. On this long journey, he wrote a business plan for his new company along the way. First, h e made a short list of products that he felt would sell well b) ........................ and eventually he wo uld sell all and more including; cds, computers, software, videos, and books. However, Bezos decide d to begin Amazon selling books. His first office was his garage, just like the founders of Google , Disney , Apple , Mattel and a few other famous companies have done. Before it became a big hit, Amazon's original name was Cadabra but it was often mispronounced as "Cadaver". So Jeff Bezos decided to change it and picked Amazon for two reasons: H e wanted a name that started with the l etter A for alphabetical reason because names starting with the letter A are always higher on alphabetical lists. After deciding on having a name th at had to start an A, Bezos cho se Amazon, which is named after the largest c) .................. ... in t he world, for its exotic appeal. Amazon.com quickly became the largest d) ........................ in the world, the first Amazon.com book that was sold was entitled Fluid Concepts and Creative Analogies: Computer Models of the Fundamental Mechanisms of Thought , by Dougla s Hofstadter. In 2007, Amazon branched out with its first consumer product Kindle, a n e - reader that wirelessly downloaded books, magazines, newspapers, blogs and personal documents to a handheld electronic display that mimicked the looks and feel of real p aper. Now, on its 16 th anniversary, Amazon can raise a toast to being one of the largest online retailers in the world, selling everything from tubas and golf carts to dishwashers and diapers.
