THE HISTORY OF FRIENDSHIP DAY
Friendship Day is celebrated on the first Sunday of August every year. A day dedicated to friends and companions, it's the time when you show how much you value your friendships with other people. Even though we celebrate Friendship Day each year, very few people know about the background of the day, its history and origins. If you want to explore the background of the day, read on. The tradition of celebrating Friendship Day started primarily in the West. In the year 1935, the US Congress chose the first Sunday of August as National Friendship Day. They realized the important role that friends play in each other’s lives and wanted to have a special day for friends. The idea soon caught on in other countries as well; honouring friends and friendship is important to everyone! Following the tradition, Friendship Day is celebrated in several countries around the world. In the famous Hindu epic Mahabharata, Lord Krishna displays all the different parts of friendship, from affection and teasing to protection and guidance. Because friendship can mean many different things to different people, it has become a major festival in some countries. It is especially popular among young people in India, but people all over pay tribute to their friends for being there when they were needed the most. Use this special day to let all your friends know that you care!
