The Legend of King Arthur and Bewolf
The Legend of King Arthur
In the 5th century, the High-King named Uther ruled Britain. He fell in love with Lady Igraine. Unfortunately, Lady Igraine was already married to Gorlois, the Duke of Tintagel. King Uther decided to marry Lady Igraine, so he took his army, fought with Gorlois and killed him. He married his love and they had a son named Arthur.
Because this was a very dangerous time – the time of many attacks by Saxons, King Uther sent Arthur away to be raised in the countryside with his foster brother Kay. He never knew who his parents were.
When King Uther died, no one knew he had a son. Many people argued who will be the next king. Suddenly, a mysterious stone with a sword stuck in it appeared in the yard of St. Paul’s Cathedral in London. There was a message on it: Whoever will put the sword out, will be the rightful king of Britain.
Years later, when Arthur was 15 years old, his foster brother, Kay, had his first knight’s tournament. The family that raised them went to London. Arthur had forgotten to take Kay’s sword, so went to look for one. He found a sword in the stone and took it out easily. When people noticed the sword was gone, they wanted to know who pulled it out. At first no one believed that it was Arthur who had done it. But later, Arthur was crowned to be the King.
The Legend of Beowulf
Once upon a time, there was a horrible monster called Grendel. He was half-man and half-monster. He lived in Denmark. One day he went to the King’s castle. The King and his man tried to kill the monster, but their swords were useless. A knight called Beowulf heard about the problem and went to Denmark to help the King. That night, Beowulf and his men took off their armour and put away their swords and went to sleep. The monster came into the castle and killed a knight. Beowulf woke up and fought the monster with his special sword – he pulled off an arm! Grendel went back to his home in a lake and died there. Grendel’s mother was enraged, and the next night, she went to the castle and killed another knight.
Beowulf went back to his country and became the King. He was asking for 50 years. But one day, a dragon came to his country and it attacked people. It lived in a cave with its treasure. The dragon was very big and it breathed fire. The knights were afraid and they didn’t want to fight the dragon. Beowulf was an old man now, but he put on his armour again and went to the dragon’s cave with only one of his knights. He killed the dragon with his special sword, but he was fatally injured and died there. The brave knight who went to the cave with Beowulf took the dragon’s treasure to Beowulf’s people.
