THE MALDIVES OF TURKEY: SALDA LAKE

Lake Salda, the deepest lake in Turkey, is located in Yeşilova, Burdur. Thousands of tourists come to Lake Salda to see its turquoise coloured water and white sands.

In addition to being the deepest lake in Turkey, Lake Salda is also the third deepest lake in the world, reaching a depth of 184 metres. You should be careful while swimming in the lake. Interestingly, there is a similarity between Lake Salda and Mars: the rocks are full of white magnesium.

Years ago, a businessman wanted to build a villa near Lake Salda. The area of the lake was designated a 1st grade Nature Protection Area in 1989. For this reason, construction around the lake was prohibited. The lake is rich in minerals due to its soil properties, which give it its beautiful colour and are responsible for creating the white sandy beach.

The local municipality provides services so that tourists are able to swim and camp around the lake. Tourists are able to set up a tent or park their caravan near the lake. Many people visit in order to see the unique landscape of the lake, and some believe that the waters of the lake are a cure for certain skin diseases.
