The Old Colonel
My life has been a good one, worth living for sure. I’m nearly 74 years old now, so of course I don’t work any more. I was in the army for 51 years and retired when I was 69. Over the years, I have been to so many countries that I can’t remember all of them. I’ve been to Australia six or seven times and to South Africa three times. I have also been to Russia but I didn’t like it at all. It was too cold for me! They say that love is the greatest thing, and I agree. I’ve been married to my wife Betty for over forty years. We’ve got two children and three grandchildren. That’s the greatest thing about being retired – now I can spend time with my grandchildren. I never had that chance with my own children. I’ve never been on television, but I’ve been on the radio once. It was a programme about life in the military about twenty years ago. I met the Prime Minister the same day. Actually, I’ve met many famous people: members of the royal family, famous politicians and also famous cinema and television personalities. I’ve never met an American President though, which is a pity. Because I’ve travelled so much, I’ve seen a lot of wonderful things and have also eaten some strange foods and had all kinds of different things to drink. I think I have been lucky to see so many different places and cultures.
