The Pyramids In Egypt
Nobody knows exactly how the pyramids in Egypt were built, and today they are the oldest of the Seven Wonders of the World. Whoever has built them built forty important pyramids along the Nile River, but the Great Pyramid of Cheops is the biggest one. Archaeologists say that it took 100,000 workers 22 years to complete it. They used 2,300,000 blocks of stone, and they finished it in 2560 BC. Archaeologists are not completely sure how they built the Great Pyramid. They know that the architects chose a site and then made the area flat. Then the workers cut the stones from large rocks and carved them into the correct shapes. Next, they put the stones in their places. Because the blocks are very heavy, architects believe the workers transported them by boat when the river flooded. We have no idea how they put the final stones on top of the pyramid, though.
The Egyptians believed in afterlife, so they put everything that the dead person would need in his next life in the pyramid: his clothes, goods, jewellery and even food and drinks. The Egyptians also believed that nobody should disturb the dead person’s body, so they built a system of passages and secret tunnels into the pyramids. This way, the robbers got lost in the tunnels, and they couldn’t steal the dead person’s treasures.
