The Umbrella
When there are dark clouds in the sky, the first thing we do before we leave our house is to take our umbrellas with us. When it starts raining, we take out and open our umbrellas in order to not get wet. But, do you know the real reason why umbrellas were invented? They were first used to protect us from the hot sun! It was invented to help people to stay out of the sun. Nobody knows who invented the umbrella, but it has been used since the ancient times. The first people to use it was the Chinese in the 11th century, and then it spread to Egypt.
In those days, the umbrella was used by royals, and using it showed authority and honor. The first people to use it in the rain were the Romans. During the Middle Ages, the umbrella disappeared from use. Then, in 16th century Italy, it was rediscovered. Later, it was used in France and then in England. In the 18th century, the umbrella was commonly used by European people for protection from rain before it became popular around the world. The shape of the umbrella hasn't changed much, but umbrellas of different colors were made in the 18th century.
