The Winchester Mystery House

The Winchester Mystery House

The Winchester Mystery House is in San Jose, California. It’s a huge mansion with 160 rooms. The house was owned by Sarah Winchester. She suffered some tragedies in her life and went to a fortune-teller. The woman told Sarah she was haunted by ghosts. To stop them, the fortune teller said Sarah must build a beautiful house and never stop building it. Therefore, she moved to California and bought an old farmhouse. For the next 38 years, carpenters worked day and night building the house. It has 40 bedrooms, 13 bathrooms, six kitchens, two ballrooms, 47 fireplaces, 17 chimneys, 2,000 doors and 10,000 windows. The house’s design is interesting. Some staircases go to the ceiling. Doors open to walls, not rooms. Some chimneys don’t connect to the roof. Many of the rooms aren’t finished. Nowadays, people can visit the house and take tours. People must follow the guides or they might get lost in the mansion.
