The Wonderful Woodpecker
The woodpecker is an interesting bird. It has got a strong and pointed beak that acts like a hammer to find insects to eat. It has got a very long tongue, up to four inches long. This tongue is sticky on its tip, for catching insects.
Most birds have got one toe pointing back and three pointing forward on each foot. Woodpeckers are a little bit different. They have got two sharp claws pointing forward on each foot to help them hold on to the sides of trees.
Woodpeckers live for 4 to 11 years. Their favorite foods are insects, fruit and nuts. These birds live in forests where there are lots of trees. Woodpeckers live all around the world, but they don’t live in Australia.
