Then and Now Computers !

Computers help us in many ways, but they cannot think and do things on their own. We feed them with information and tell them how to use it. They do not come up with new information, but they can save us a lot of time and effort.

The first computers were huge and costly. They filled up almost an entire floor of large offices. Later, scientists found ways to produce cheaper and smaller computers for everybody to use. Chips were invented which made it possible to keep more information in a much smaller space. These days, computers are both cheaper and more compact. We can use them on a normal writing table.

We can even carry them easily from place to place. Computers are used in offices, at school, and at home if families can afford them. These days, robots are being used much more widely, too. Robots are not mechanical people; they are only moving parts controlled by a computer. A robot can do the same job for twenty-four hours and it does not complain or get tired. We also use robots in factories to assemble cars in Japan and in the USA. Thanks to computers becoming more common, people are worried that one day computers and computer- controlled robots will take the jobs of humans. If this happens, unemployment would become extremely high.
