THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE GOING TO UNIVERSITY
While you are still in high school, you probably are still enjoying the comfort of living at home with your family. You probably don’t need to worry about things such as cooking, cleaning, shopping or finance. When you get to university, you personally need to deal with these things yourself, as well as completing all your school work. This can be a bit of a shock for those who are not prepared for the life in university but it is completely doable. Here are a few things to know:
1. You’ll have to cook for yourself: This won’t be a problem for people who do this in the parental home already, but those who are used to having people doing everything for them will definitely be shocked. However, it’s not difficult to learn a few basic recipes. Try starting with spaghetti Bolognese or scrambled eggs. Since you will not be cooking for a large number of people, it will be even easier than you might think.
2. Your accommodation might not be as nice as home: For most people, university is their first experience of living away from the family home. After the comforts of home, university dormitories can seem a bit crowded. This can cause homesickness. So, make your new room as homely as possible with simple tricks like bringing your own duvet set, putting up posters and photos on the walls, or taking a houseplant or two.
3. You might be needing some smart clothes: This may come as a surprise to you, but students don’t always wear hoodies and jeans. There may be a few formal events each year that require you to get dressed formally.
