TITANIC VERSION 3-D
The Titanic is one of the world’s most famous ships. Actually, it is the most famous ship. It was a British passenger ship. It sank on April 15, 1912. It hit an iceberg in the North Atlantic and sank to the bottom of the ocean. 1503 people died and 705 people survived. In 1985, scientist Robert Ballard found the remains of the Titanic on the sea floor.
Many scientists studied the wreck of Titanic. Most wanted to take photographs. Others hoped to gather artifacts. They hoped to find things like fine china, shoes, and ship fittings.
In August 2010, there was a new study of the Titanic. A team of archaeologists, oceanographers and other scientists set out to learn the condition of the ship’s remains. The scientists took pictures of the wreck. They also took videos. They used the latest technology during the study. This helped them look for artifacts on the ship.
The study didn’t go exactly as planned, however. The weather was very bad so the scientist couldn’t continue their trip. However, the scientists could take pictures of the shipwreck. They took photos. They also recorded sounds in the waters near the ship.
Now, scientists will use all this information. They plan to create a 3-D map of the Titanic. The map will be put online. It will allow many people to see the Titanic up close. The map will also help preserve the history of the world’s most famous shipwreck.
“I’m sure there will be future expeditions because this is just the beginning of a whole new era of these kind of expeditions to Titanic - serious, archaeological mapping expeditions,” Gallo said.
